Her Reluctant Hero, by Marty Barnes, includes all the integral elements of a well-developed story. Written by a wordsmith, who is also a gifted writer, the characters in this story draw the reader into their lives early-on. The dilemmas and challenges Claire and Nick face in their lives are presented in a way which makes this book a page-turner, one which is difficult to put aside until "just one more chapter" is read.I also enjoyed the fluid, conversational dialogue, written by Marty Barnes, in a "now" vernacular--sprinkled with playful bantering and lots of wit. In addition, Claire's story makes one painfully aware of the devastating effect upon a woman, like Claire, who has undergone abuse by a cruel and relentless husband.Yet, it also shows how one, scarred by spousal abuse, can start life anew and still find contentment/happiness for both herself and her child/children through the innate characteristics of self-preservation--especially inner-strength and determination.
This is a book my husband and I each enjoyed, and it is one I highly recommend. I can hardly wait for the sequel!

A decent story with well developed characters. There is a slight bit of suspense, but the plot focused more on the main characters developing romance. My only quibble is that the writer referred to Claire's half-brother as her step brother.
I tried to read this book, but it couldn't hold my attention. It felt too cheesy to me. They meet and bicker for a bit. Then, a few minutes later, she spills that her ex-husband abused her and now that her special forces brother has died, the ex is back. And she hasn't told anyone else this but the guy she just met, who just happens to be a former special forces guy. And he switches gears and offers to install a security system in 2 days. Then charms the woman and her toddler daughter in over the top cute fashion. And that was it for me.
Basically, I decided this felt too formulaic after 6 chapters, and I didn't feel invested in more cookie cutter events. You may feel differently.
Thoroughly entertaining. The story was very well developed. The characters were believeable and very engaging.
This was a quick read, once I began, I couldn't put it down!
